Most modern browsers support web push notifications as well as the two big mobile OSes. Completely different mechanisms though: Websites run JavaScript in a background thread as WebWorker , from which they can launch notification or nearly anything else normal JavaScript does. In that background thread, they hold open a connection to a web server. Every tab that does that has its own connection, handled in its own background thread. Mobile apps use an operating system service that holds open a single connection to a centralized server (Android: Google Play Services and Google's server). Source
