What was actually said

“We are a subsidiary and copy via ODBC part of a big database from our parent company onto our own servers. The old software we are using is at the end of its life-cycle; it was never the best and we built a lot of workarounds within and around it.”

Background and pain

The pain

The data pipeline is held together by workarounds, the vendor is sunsetting it, and any replacement must still speak legacy ODBC without breaking daily reporting.

A buildable angle

The opening

A lightweight ODBC/SQL incremental-sync ETL for SMEs: 'ship your slice of the parent database to your own server' out of the box. Per-instance or per-volume pricing.

How to validate it

  1. Read the whole thread and note the recurring scenarios — repetition is the density of the need.
  2. Search existing tools around "etl / data sync" and check which single step they actually cover.
  3. Put up a one-line landing page, share it back to Stack Exchange, and see whether anyone asks about pricing.

Existing options

Talend, Airbyte, SSIS

Pentaho can do that. You set up your workflow (read from ODBC, write to your database, perform ETL transformations, etc) then define how often you want it to run, for instance monthly. Commercial support is available.

You can use Debezium with commercial support from Red Hat LLC. https://access.redhat.com/articles/4938181 https://debezium.io It can replicate your database at every change, rather than once per month. After you set it up, you don't have to run it manually, it is all automatic. "Consolidation" is subjective so I suggest doing that in a different stage.
